Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in
jewelry. The name comes from the ancient Greek ἀ a- ("not") and
μέθυστος methustos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that
the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst
and made drinking vessels decorated with it in the belief that it would prevent
intoxication. It is one of several forms of quartz.
Amethyst is a semiprecious stone and is the traditional
birthstone for February. It is also the gemstone for the 6th and 17th
anniversaries of marriage.
The color of amethyst can range from a pale lilac to a deep
purple, and it is often used in jewelry because of its beauty and durability.
It is also said to have healing properties and is believed to help with
emotional balance, spiritual growth, and to have a calming effect.
Amethyst can be found in many locations around the world,
including Brazil, Uruguay, and the Artibonite Valley in Haiti. The largest
amethyst geode is located in the city of Artigas, Uruguay, and is known as
"The Artigas Natural Amethyst Cave" it is open to the public and is a
popular tourist destination.
The ancient Romans also believed in the power of amethyst
and made signet rings engraved with the stone to protect them from drunkenness
and to give them a clear head in business.
